Some of you may have noticed we’ve recently launched a Q&A forum where users can post questions about our website, licensing, our sounds and also the ability to request soundfx. So I thought it might be good to write a little blog post about this service just to clarify some of the questions I’ve received recently.
Firstly, the requesting sound feature it is a free service, just like the core zapsplat.com ethos. We will do our best to create sound effects for you for free and we’ll do our best to do this as quickly as possible. Considering we get thousands of people visiting our website daily and downloading our content, we hope you’ll understand that in some circumstances we may not be able to fulfil all requests. Some days we are completely bogged down with work and others we may be out on location recording, or in the studio editing. It’s in between these days we’ll do what we can to help.
Why did we launch this service?
The new request service was launched for two reasons. Firstly, we want to know what you need and what we are lacking. It’s impossible to have every sound for every user and even if we cover most bases, sometimes a sound just isn’t right. So by offering this service we hope to be able to learn what our members need and build a library of sounds around this. Secondly, sometimes it’s just nice to have fresh ideas from others.
About ownership and copyright
If we manage to create the perfect sound effect for you, we’ll release it into the main library and post a link to it. All sounds created are owned by us, we retain all copyrights and license them to you via our Standard License. I often get asked if we can create sounds and assign the copyright over. Mostly the answer to this is no.
How many sounds can I request?
There isn’t an exact answer to this. Obviously if someone asks us for 100+ sounds, we’ll probably need to go grab a stiff drink before answering! We’ll normally create one or two versions of each sound. If you need a revision, feel free to ask in the post comments, but we can’t guarantee we’ll be able to.
I didn’t receive a reply to my request, why?
We always try and reply, even if we can’t create what you need. But in the event we haven’t replied within a few days, it’s likely we’ve just not had time. If your request isn’t answered, please don’t take it personally and please understand we’re extremely busy. We do go back over posts and add any requests we didn’t manage to make to a list. When we have spare time, we try to create them, even if it’s a few weeks or even months after the requests were made. Therefore it’s always worth checking the main library for what you need as it may well have been created and added at some stage.
If you’re working on a large project and need to hire a sound designer to help, we always recommend you check out soundlister.com
