This is a bit of a spoiler, but here is some info on a feature we are working on implementing and I just wanted to reach out with the ideas and gather any feedback people may have.
While there are some great resources out there for free sound effects, such as us, freesound.org etc, there is a real lack of space for sound designers, sfx libraries and music composers (from students through to seasoned pros) to share a small portion of their work for the purpose of gaining valuable exposure to the filmmaking, game and app development, animation etc communities.
I also run www.sounddevs.com which a social network for audio pros and I’ve seen through the community there, people generally want to share their work, get feedback and introduce themselves and their work to a new audience. This is especially important for the younger up-and-coming creatives who want to prove to the world just how good there sound effects and/or music is.
So we’ve been putting together some plans for increasing our contributor base by allowing them an easier way to upload sound effects into the library from the front-end of the website. This would enable them to build a portfolio of sounds and make them available for free download as mp3 and wav files for our users to download and use in their projects. Along side this we are thinking about allowing our users to tag the downloads with the project they are working on, and then this automatically attaching itself to the contributors portfolio here at zapsplat.com.
Another idea is to allow the contributor to add to their portfolio everything from their website, social channels, projects they’ve worked on, awards they’ve received or been nominated for etc. With this information available for the general user of our website to access, it’ll help those sound designers and composers to display their creative skills and background to thousands of people every day.
Status updates
Another idea I have is to create a status wall, a place for our contributors to post news updates about themselves, their work, products they have for sale elsewhere, or just other interesting news and updates. This would be accessible by everyone and act as an automatically updating news stream of information relevant to users across the spectrum of industries we cater for.
Possibility of a ‘hire me’ feature.
Just like many of the freelancing websites out there, one of the potentially powerful aspects of a system like this is the ability to connect sound designers and audio creatives directly to the users who need them. We have sketched some ideas down on how this may be achieved through zapsplat.com and ways it may help all that use our website.
Thoughts and feedback welcome
I’d welcome any thoughts and feedback you may have on this update. Do you think it’s a good idea, or bad idea? Do you have any suggestions on other features you might like to see? Please let me know in an email.
